"GOOD MORNING MISS POTTER!"
"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"
"YES MISS POTTER!"
"Very good. Then we will begin. Today's lesson is about the Bible. How many of you children read your Bible at home? No one? Yes, Jimmy, you have your hand raised. Do you read your Bible?"
"Well, Kinda', I guess. I have a comic book that's kind of like the Bible with pictures and stuff. I read that when I was little, but I don't read it any more. Does that count Miss Potter?"
"I suppose it would if you were still reading it. Why don't you read it any more Jimmy? Don't you find it interesting?"
"Well, I guess I do, kinda'. But Miss Potter, some of the stories I don't understand, and some I like but I already read them. How many times am I supposed to read them? Am I bad if I don't read it all the time?"
"No Jimmy, you're not bad...."
"Miss Potter, I have a comic book too, but it's not about the Bible and things. It's about Superman. And Superman does things like they do in the Bible. Is that like reading the Bible? Does that count?"
"Aw, Bobby, Superman isn't like the Bible. Superman can't make people who died not be dead any more like Jesus did. Can he Miss Potter?"
"Yes he can too! Superman can fly all over the place and he can do anything. If he wants to make dead people not dead any more he can do it, can't he Miss Potter?"
"No he can't Bobby. I got a comic that tells about Superman trying to do that with a girl, I mean make her alive again, and he couldn't do it. So there Bobby. Superman can't do everything like you said he can."
"I got that story too Larry, and the girl had Kryptonite in her purse, and that's why he couldn't make her alive again. That don't count."
"Miss Potter? I don't have no Superman comic, but I got Smurf and I watch them all the time. I like the Smurf's. Does the Smurf's count for reading the Bible like Superman does? I don't think they can make people alive again, but maybe they can."
"Aw, Timmy, the Smurfs aren't real people like Superman is. They're just a cartoon kind of people. Cartoons can't do real things like Superman can."
"The Smurfs are too real Judy. I saw them on TV. And I saw them at the mall once and even got my pi'cher took with them. So there Miss smarty pants."
"Aw you guys, they're both just funny paper kind of people, they're not real like the X-Men. The X-Men are real kind of people. I read all their books lots of times and see them on the movies bunches of times too. I bet I know everything about the X-Men, because I get everything about X-Men there is I betcha'"
"I bet I know everything about the Smurfs and stuff. I bet I can tell you everything they say because I listen real hard to them talk."
"Aw, those guys aren't nothin'. It's Spider man who's the best. I read Spiderman all the time and he's the best."
"Miss Potter? I don't got none of those books. But I got a lot of Barbie comics. Do they count for reading the Bible?"
"Children, it appears you all pay very close attention to your own favorite comic book character. I would like to ask you, do you believe in comics? I mean, do you believe the characters in the comics are real?"
"Sure I do Miss Potter. I seen them on the movies and everything. They can't make movies about something that's not real."
"I don't know Miss Potter. I mean, Barbie is real all right. I don't know about the Smurfs and Superman and all them other guys. I didn't see them like Timmy did. But Barbie is real. I saw her on TV."
"Well, tell me children, you believe in your comics, do you believe in Jesus?"
"I think I do Miss Potter. I saw Him on a movie once. I guess that makes Him real."
"I saw Him on a cartoon program once, so I know He's real all right. I don't know if He can fly like Superman can, but I know he teaches people things and stuff. That's what He did in the cartoon I saw."
"Miss Potter, if we see Jesus in a cartoon, is that the same as reading the Bible? I can do that a bunch of times if I have to. But I'd rather watch my Barbie Movie."
"I suppose it doesn't really matter which movie you watch Becky. I'm getting the picture that you all see Jesus as no more than a comic book character, and that you believe on Jesus even less than you believe in your comics. And I suppose I shouldn't expect any more from you children, since the adults don't really view Jesus much differently than you all do."
13For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. 14How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? 17So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. (Rom 10:)
1Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. 2For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. (Heb 4:)
