Doctrine in dialogue format
Penelope Potter Ss.T
"GOOD MORNING MISS POTTER!"
"Is everyone ready to begin their Sunday School lesson for today?"
"YES MISS POTTER!"
"Very good. Then we will begin. Today's lesson is about keeping in touch with God. Can anyone tell me how to tune a radio to a channel? Yes Teddy?"
"I think I can Miss Potter because my grandpa has one of those real old radios made of antique stuff like wood before they started to grow plastic. It's kind of fun to tune a channel because it makes a bunch of noise like chickens or mean old cats and stuff."
"Can you tell me why the radio makes the strange sounds Teddy?"
"I think it's because I don't have the thingamajigger right that makes the radio sounds like they should Miss Potter. When the thingamajigger gets where it's supposed to be I can hear the words real good."
"You mean the tuning knob Teddy. Yes, when the radio is tuned to the same frequency, that is the same channel as the station is on, then the sound comes in clearly. Otherwise the radio is either picking up nothing, or it is picking up stations that you don't want to hear, or that you aren't looking for. Can anyone tell me how a radio is like listening to God?"
"I think so Miss Potter. If we get the thingamajigger, I mean tuning knob, my grandpa calls everything a thingamajigger, on the channel it's kind of like listening real hard to what the teacher is saying instead of playing my I-pod in my ear at the same time. Did I get it right Miss Potter?"
"Yes you did Teddy. We have to listen to God if we want to hear Him and understand what He's telling us. We can't be listening to other voices and other sounds while He's trying to talk to us. Who else might want to talk to us and keep us from hearing what God is saying to us? Yes Millie?"
"The devil Miss Potter?"
"Yes Millie, the devil would like very much to have us listen to other people instead of God. And how does the devil do that? Yes Michael?"
"He gets us to listen to other people who say they talk for God? Is that right Miss Potter?"
"Very good Michael. The devil has people who pretend they are speaking and teaching the Words of God and they cause many people to turn their ear away from hearing what God has to tell us. Is there anything else that can cause us to have a bad connection with God? Yes Teddy?"
"Sometimes my grandpa's radio just won't tune in to the channel he wants to hear. He says it's static or something like that. Then he has to take the radio apart and clean the tuning things because they get dust and dirt and things like that in there and keep the tuning things from touching each other."
"Oh, Miss Potter! I think I know. My daddy sometimes can't get his flashlight to work right because it goes off and on and gets dim-like. Then he takes the batteries out and cleans them. He said that makes them touch each other and lets the electricity go through them better. He said any little thing, even our fingerprint, will make the flashlight not work right."
"You have the idea exactly children. So when we're trying to listen to God, how can the dust in a radio or a flashlight help us to know how to hear God better. What can get in the way of hearing God?"
"Sin Miss Potter?"
"Yes, sin will certainly keep us from hearing God, and sin will keep God from wanting to talk to us. But there's something else that gets in the way of listening to God. Can anyone tell me what it is?"
"Do you mean like wanting things for our self and not thinking about God or other people Miss Potter?"
19He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them. (Psalm 145:)
20Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 21To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. (Rev 3:)
7My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. (John 10:)
18Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. (Luke 8:)
